Highlights – Windhoek – Namib Desert – Ancient Rock Art – Brandberg – Burnt Mountain – Damaraland – Etosha National Park.
Upon arrival at the Windhoek International Airport you will be welcomed and assisted by your pilot. An air shuttle will take you to the Namib. Enjoy the scenic flight over this most ancient desert before your arrival in Sossusvlei. The dunes here are part of a huge sea of sand.
A transfer brings you from the airstrip to the Desert Homestead Outpost Lodge. On a sundowner drive in the afternoon, you will get a first impression of the beauty and serenity of the desert.
The next morning at sunrise you will embark on an excursion to the Sossusvlei, reputed to have the highest dunes in the world. “Sossus” means “Blind River”: the dunes are an insurmountable barrier for the Tsauchab River, which only flows every 5-20 years and then ends amidst the towering dunes.
2 nights at Desert Homestead Outpost (incl. 1 Sossusvlei excursion).
Today you will again see this majestic desert landscape from above. During the flight to Swakopmund you will have a bird’s eye view on the amazing contrast created where the sand sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. You fly northwards along the coast and, depending on the weather, you can spot Conception Bay and Sandwich Harbour, a wetland of international importance.
Swakopmund is one of the most surreal places in Namibia. The small town with its relaxed atmosphere is tucked in between the Atlantic Ocean and the dunes which reach right to the border of the town. The palm-lined streets with their picturesque German colonial architecture invite for a stroll.
1 night at The Delight in Swakopmund.
This morning you choose between activities on the ocean or in the desert. On a Living Desert Tour experienced guides show you that the desert is alive. The “small five” are masters in the art of living in this harsh environment. Or, experience the beauty and variety of sea life in the Walvis Bay Lagoon on a Catamaran marine cruise. Schools of dolphins might swim alongside the boat, and seals frequently jump aboard for a visit. A brunch of fresh Walvis Bay Oysters and light snacks, along with sparkling wine will be served aboard.
In the afternoon you fly northwards in the direction of Twyfelfontein. There, you will check into your room at Camp Kipwe. This luxury camp is nestled in the boulders, facing out onto superb scenery.
In the afternoon, you will set out to discover this part of Damaraland. On an excursion to the World Heritage Site Twyfelfontein you can ponder over the messages the ancient rock engravings might convey of the original inhabitants of this fairy-tale landscape.
On the next day, you will go searching the rare desert-adapted elephants with a 4×4 safari vehicle and a guide.
2 nights at Camp Kipwe on Full Board inclusive of 1 Twyfelfontein Engravings tour & 1 Desert Elephant tour.
After you have enjoyed your breakfast the plane will take you to the Mokuti Lodge adjoining the Etosha National Park. This nature reserve boasts 22.000 m2 – that is about the half of Switzerland! Etosha is famous for its wildlife. The heart of the park is a large salt pan which is surrounded by flat bushland. Etosha supports an estimated 300 lions, 300 rhinos, 2000 giraffes and 1500 elephants. Particularly numerous are the dainty springbok – of which there are at least 30,000! Etosha National Park has a good infrastructure – well-maintained gravel roads lead to the waterholes, where game viewing is at its best.
Mokuti Lodge is a green oasis where you can make yourself comfortable and relax. Charming thatched buildings and two sparkling pools nestled among the vast indigenous gardens, give credence to the name “Mokuti”, which in the local Ovambo language means “In the forest”. As it is only 4 minutes away from the Van Lindequist Gate, it is an ideal starting point for the game drives which you will undertake in the park in open safari vehicles.
2 nights at Mokuti Lodge with all meals including 4 game drives in open safari vehicles.
Today your safari comes to an end. A small aircraft will take you back to the international airport in Windhoek. From there you can embark on your onward journey.
